SCOTT ORTH - SMJH EXPERIMENT
On November 19th, 2008, I launched my Social Media Job Hunt (SMJH) experiment in response to being laid off.
I’ve been asked, "Why bother with this? Why not just post your resume like everyone else to try to get a new job?" I did post my resume everywhere, I submitted applications, and I reviewed job listings on every possible outlet. But I wanted to do more.
I’m not one to sit idly. In fact, rather than slump into despair and depression, while driving away from the office for the last time, an idea popped into my head. I quickly pulled off the highway to scribble some notes, and 30 minutes later the plan was born. I spent the next day and a half preparing, planning, and writing – I then officially launched the experiment on Wednesday morning (11/19).
This was so much more than a personal job hunt. In just a few days I gained hundreds of followers, received dozens of well-wishes, and accumulated a powerful list of people and resources to help in a job search. Through this experiment, and in my final write-up, I hope to help others in a speedy re-placement in the job market – and maybe entertain a little along the way.
Good luck and God Bless!
